David Eberhard
Specialist doctor, psychiatry
David Eberhard specializes in psychiatry and addictive behavior disorders and has close to three decades of experience in diagnosing and treating all kinds of psychiatric illnesses. Among other roles, David has been chief medical consultant at the psychiatric emergency department in the Stockholm City Council and Maria Addiction Clinic in Stockholm. David has solid medical knowledge and a strong focus on the necessity of treating psychiatric conditions and addictive disorders in conjunction, with both pharmacological means and psychotherapeutic strategies. Always putting the patient first.
Neuropsychiatry is David’s field of research and he is passionate about making the care of the most vulnerable patients more secure. In his work, he combines a scientific focus on pharmacological, evidence-based treatments and an ardent interest in effective new treatment strategies with the capacity to see the individual patient’s specific needs.
After many years as a specialist in clinical practice, David is convinced that successful treatment is contingent on the practitioner’s ability to meet the patient in his or her context, with respect, curiosity and genuine knowledge. The way forward is in close cooperation with the patient. Not least important is how the healthcare provider communicates with the patient outside of the traditional assessment interview. This includes everything from talking about existential questions and relationship problems to the physical environment of the clinic.
Substandard and worn-down facilities are all too common in traditional addictive disorder care and counteract the confidence and respect that are so important to build between patient and provider. Equally, if the health care provider cannot discuss the meaning of life with a homeless heroin addict and in that way show that the patient is a fellow human being worth listening to and understanding the patient will never gain the self-respect that is so vital for recovery.
